Winter holiday in Oberbozen on the Ritten

Winter is a summer break. When it snows, the gods celebrate. (from the Norman saga)

Winter, a time for romantics and dreamers. At no other time of year can you find such powerful peace and harmony on the Ritten. Experience a winter holiday in Oberbozen on the Ritten!

Deeply snowed-in forests, frozen lakes and sun-flooded meadows invite you to go snow hiking. Due to the fact that the Rittner Hochplateau is a very wide hilly landscape and only rises steeply at the Rittner Horn, the snow hiker, the snowshoe hiker and the cross-country skier will find a landscape that seems to be made for these sports. The alpine skier enjoys wide and spacious slopes at the Rittner Horn, where there is plenty of room for everyone! These slopes range from easy to challenging, sun exposed and quite wind safe. The panorama is simply indescribable. As far as the eye can see, a string of 3000m peaks covered in deep snow leaves unforgettable impressions.

In the evening you can still visit the small farms in the light of a lantern. In the taverns there you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and Christmas baking in the cosy warmth of the heated farm stoves.

Skiing

The Rittner Horn can be the ideal place for family skiing in winter. The new cable car, which can also pick you up or drop you off at the half way station, and the 2 ski lifts take you up to a skiing experience in a marvellous, sunny area with perfectly kept, broad slopes (ca. 15km).

Snowboarders can also find their ideal space to let off steam. The Sledge slope leads from the half way station of the circular track into the valley. A very efficient ski school which is particularly focussed on lessons for the very small has set up a kids’ ski garden at the half way station where a conveyor belt has also been built. (Note: practice area with conveyor belt is only for purposes of the courses)

There is a modern ski hire shop at the valley station of the cable car. A new igloo and Zenti’s pub welcome you for a post-skiing drink.

Cross country skiing

From around 20th December every year the cross-country ski tracks are made available. There are three distinct areas.

  1. ‘Beautiful’ area: Easy, short tracks on the Schön meadows near to the half way station.
  2. ‘Rittner Horn’ area: Challenging track which leads from the Unterhornhaus via the north side of the Horn to the Gasteiger-Sattel.
  3. ‘Villanders’ area: the fantastic high-altitude track which leads from the Unteren Rittner Horn to the Villanderer meadows (ca. 35 km).
Snowshoe hiking

There are very few other sports which give such a feeling of being out and about in the heart of nature. No marked routes, the fences are buried under the snow, you can’t damage any meadows… Simply start in one direction, and go for as long as you wish – that’s all there is to it! We can provide you with the equipment needed here in our house! However please do not forget your good pair of warm hiking boots.

For those of you wanting something a bit more peaceful: in winter we clear some of our paths of snow. We can also provide you with Grödeln (iron fittings to prevent slipping) in the hotel.
